What is Toronto Commercial Photography?

Toronto Commercial Photography

Successful commercial photographers are not only great photographers. They understand how things sell, and are able to articulate the qualities that drive people to purchase a given product or service.

The term “commercial photography” comes up quite often in the photography world, including my services page… but what is Toronto commercial photography?

The defining characteristic of a commercial photographer is that your work is purchased or licensed, rather than shooting a project on a per hour basis. You produce products that help sell a product or are used for marketing purposes.

It can be something as simple as licensing an image of a flower from your website that is used in a gardening magazine….or as complex as being commissioned for a large shoot to produce images for an international marketing campaign.

That being said, commercial photography isn’t just one area of photography, it covers all types. You could be a commercial photographer in general, or specialize in one type, eg, (sports, fashion, food, automotive etc.)

Successful commercial photographers are not only great photographers. They understand how things sell, and are able to articulate the qualities that drive people to purchase a given product or service.

When working with commercial clients, (as a photographer) I think it’s really important to be on the same page as them in terms of the creative direction and outcome of a commercial shoot. Chances are, they’re spending a lot of money not only for the photos but the marketing, printing and advertising for them as well.

The images produced and style of production should align very closely with both the overall branding strategy that exists for that product or service and play to the target demographic that the company is going after.”

To put it simply, commercial photographers shoot stuff that our clients go and sell.
